Park Plans 2014

We’ve been getting a lot of questions about our terrain parks and when they’re going to open. For those of you who are new or have questions about our terrain parks, check out the full detail on our website, here.

Here’s some facts and figures for you:

  • Cannonsburg has around (at least) 85 park features.
  • All of our park features are built in-house by our fabricators.
  • We have 7 parks, made for all ages and skill levels.
  • Our smallest feature is about 2 in. high, and our biggest feature is 20 ft. high.
  • Cannonsburg adds an average of 20 new features every season.
  • Cannonsburg was voted #2 Best Park in the Midwest by Transworld Snowboarding
  • Every park has a different goal and feel, using terrain in different ways

Here are some updates on the status of our parks as of January 1st, 2014.

Monster City Park: Opening January 11th, 2014 at 11am. Be here for the huge party we’ll be throwing, complete with spot prizing, the Monster Army Team (MAT), and of course the biggest and baddest urban terrain park in the Midwest.

Cannon Park: The jumpline is up! Situated on the double, we’ve had issues in the past with building a jumpline on a hill with a lot of flat spots. After a lot of designing and calculating by our park team, we figured out a perfect equation. The jumpline is set up with some speed hits at the top, and then two poppy jumps. The last jump has two lips, so pick your pop! The Cannon Park also has the new 686 up-box and up-rail.

Showtime Park: The Showtime Park opened on Dec. 7th, and has since held about 10 features. For the weekend of Jan. 4-5, it will be rebuilt as a private park for the So-Gnar camp.

The Projects: The Projects are being built out today (1/1/2014) and will be open by the weekend!

The Playground: The Playground park has been built out for several weeks and currently has nine features. Included is the brand new Icelantic rail, the favorite Oakley box, and The Shop stall. We plan to rearrange Playground throughout the season, so keep an eye out!

Jiblet Park: Jiblet is built out and ready for those beginner to intermediate riders looking to progress their skills. We’ve got ground level and just-off-the-ground features serviced by Progression Express!

Riglet Park: The Riglet Park will be built in the next two weeks! Get your little ones ready!

As always, Cannonsburg’s parks will be second to none this season. We’ve added more features and are constantly improving our parks. Don’t hesitate to shoot us a facebook message, tweet at us, or email us with suggestions or questions!

Postponing Pre-Jib & Opening Updates

Last season, we were devastated to postpone the Rome Premature Jibulation from December 3rd to December 10th. This year, we would love having that problem!
We’ve already addressed the problems weather has caused with snowmaking. Sadly things haven’t gotten better… in fact, rain and extreme warm-ups have stunted our opening even more. Our resident weatherman/ski school director John Losey believes the last time we had weather patterns like these were in the late 1980’s!

We were able to blow snow the night of December 10. At 10pm, temps finally hit 28°. Kelly Bennett wrapped up interviewing with the Fox17 and announced it was time to start making snow. The first gun fired at the top of Quad, and within ten minutes every gun on the hill was going. We made a decent base, but temps were too warm to get the guns going full blast.

Temps began rising during the week, and the weekend brought heavy rain activity to Grand Rapids. While much of the snow has melted off, large piles in all the right places remain!

Pre-Jib was originally scheduled for December 15th. After seeing the downpour all day Saturday, we were content with the decision to postpone Pre-Jib. In looking forward at the forecast, we see only one snowmaking opportunity this coming Friday. This wouldn’t give us enough time to blow snow AND build a respectable park set-up by December 22. We consulted with Rome about postponing the event again and agreed it would be the right thing to do.

There are amazing snowmaking opportunities this weekend and into next week. You heard it here first: We are planning on December 26 being our opening day.
Pre-jib is set for December 29
. With the additional snow we should be able to make, we’re planning on adding more features to the set-up. This event will NOT be one to miss. We’ve got several Rome Riders making appearances such as Marie Hucal, Cameron Strand, Tommy Young, Jacob Visser, plus several AM Army riders will be judging. The prizing is insane, the vibe is always the best and many riders said it was their favorite event last season. Check out the event page!

forecastTemps in the low-20’s are AMAZING for snowmaking and exactly the kind of break we need in order to get open on several hills and create the kind of park set-up we envision for Pre-jib. If you know Cannonsburg, you know that we never do things halfway. We aim to create the best local experience possible, providing the best terrain, best parks and best vibe in Michigan.

We thank all of you for your patience and understanding. We’re all hoping for a white christmas and a great ski & ride season.

Rome Premature Jibulation 2012

It’s back! For the second year in a row, Rome Snowboards will  be kicking off the event calendar on December 22nd with the Rome Premature Jibulation!
Last year, Cannonsburg had THE biggest Pre-jib in the country with over 225 participants. This year we want it to be even bigger.
Due to poor weather conditions, Pre-Jib was pushed back from the 15th. An extensive course build out is planned, and as most of you know, we don’t like to do anything halfway. The course design for Pre-Jib is at the bottom of this post.
Rome has majorly upped the prizes this year. The overall first place rider will walk away with a new Rome board, bindings, boots AND a season pass to Cannonsburg. Second place will score a board and bindings, third place gets some boots and a backpack.
Rome will also be hosting “Cash for Tricks” – a pretty awesome way to get some extra money. Do the best trick on a feature, get a $100 bill. Pretty simple!
Time to brush off your board, tie up your boots and get in full-on winter mode!

Check out last year’s edit for a little reminder of how awesome it was:

2012-2013 updates

For the past two years, Cannonsburg has been all about updates. Last season, we made huge investments all across the hill including a renovated and improved snow-making system, expanded terrain for skiers and snowboarders, and way too many other things to list. We’ve really enjoyed getting feedback from skiers and riders about all of our efforts, so we decided to continue it this season.

Our brand new Prinoth Bison X Snowcat!

Our brand new Prinoth Bison X Snowcat!

Yesterday, we got one of our new Prinoth Bison X snowcats on-site. We previewed them at Shredtoberfest, but now it’s actually here! This particular snowcat has amazing park-grooming capabilities AND can maintain groomed runs. This futuristic looking snowcat is very much the future of hill maintenance and terrain park grooming due to its agility and versatility… plus we hear it’s got a really, really good stereo.
One of the major projects we’ve taken on is expanding leisurely ski and ride terrain along with freestyle terrain. We created runs in the previously unused area between midrope and the triple as well as removing tubing to create two new terrain parks.

Our adult race leagues for those 21+ are getting a huge face lift this season. If you’re not quite an Olympic skier, don’t worry. Race League director John Losey has created a three-tier system for all levels of skiers and snowboarders so no one gets left in the dust. Keep an eye out for more information in the coming weeks about the huge changes for race leagues. We’re excited!

This season, we are ecstatic to re-open the triple. Little snowfall combined with maintenance and upgrades forced us to decommission it for the 2011-12 season.
…and we filled the potholes!!!

Terrain Park Updates
As expected, we’re expanding our terrain park feature options even more. We’ve got a team working every single day on expanding our park features and making sure the old ones are up to our high standard. They’re the best in the business with their design, welding, fabrication, and painting skills.
The new Monster City Park will tentatively host some old and familiar features, plus these brand new ones:

16’ Stair Set
• 16’x6” Round Down Rail
16’ Ledge w/ Hubbas
• 24’ Stair Set
• 24’x6” Round Down Rail 24’x6”
• Down Ledge
Gate Rail
Chain Stall
10’ Closeout
20’ Closeout

Our signature feature list is growing, too!
Burton Aberdeen Rail
Oakley Trap Ledge
• Rome SDS Hubba Ledge

We decided to take the City theme one step further and throw in some junkyard features:
• Two 4’ Diameter Culverts
• Two 3’ Diameter Half Tubes
• 20’ Jersey Barrier
• 10’ Jersey Barrier

Some other normal features we’re building out:
24’x6” Y-Rail / Double Elbow
• 16’ Cannon Rail
• Merry-Go-Round
We have a few more features we’re building during the season that we’re going to keep secret for a little bit. Stay tuned!
We are just about out of room to create any more terrain parks, but we LOVE switching out features and keeping our parks fresh, challenging, and exciting. Our goal is to rotate all of these features through parks like Progression and The Projects as frequently as possible.

At Cannonsburg, we LOVE feedback. We want to hear what you think, what you want to see, what you don’t want to see, tell us about your cat… whatever is on your mind. Send us a message or leave a comment on Facebook, tweet us, or shoot us an email.

The Monster City Park at Cannonsburg

Cannonsburg has partnered up with Monster Energy to create a beast of a park.

Last year we took an underutilized area, put in two rope-tows servicing two separate terrain parks – an intermediate-level progression style park – “The Projects”, and a street-influenced advanced level park – “The City Park.” We started seeing photos and edits of skiers and riders in the park… “wow” didn’t even begin to cover it. The City Park turned into a showcase of the level of talent we have here at Cannonsburg.

Early this fall, Monster approached Cannonsburg with one goal: Let us get more involved. We weren’t sure how to do this… until they asked if they could sponsor the build-out of an entire park. An estimated $50,000 investment from both Monster and Cannonsburg means our biggest park build-out yet with some of the most creative features we’ve ever designed.

This season, we’re constructing nearly a dozen features for this park, and next season about half a dozen.

The park will be filled with urban features similar to what you’d see around the city… but with more snow, a rope tow instead of a banshee bungee, and no trespassing tickets.

Check out the course drawings we’ve put together, share them on Facebook, let us know what you think, then keep an eye out for the park opening date/party.
