Park Plans 2014

We’ve been getting a lot of questions about our terrain parks and when they’re going to open. For those of you who are new or have questions about our terrain parks, check out the full detail on our website, here.

Here’s some facts and figures for you:

  • Cannonsburg has around (at least) 85 park features.
  • All of our park features are built in-house by our fabricators.
  • We have 7 parks, made for all ages and skill levels.
  • Our smallest feature is about 2 in. high, and our biggest feature is 20 ft. high.
  • Cannonsburg adds an average of 20 new features every season.
  • Cannonsburg was voted #2 Best Park in the Midwest by Transworld Snowboarding
  • Every park has a different goal and feel, using terrain in different ways

Here are some updates on the status of our parks as of January 1st, 2014.

Monster City Park: Opening January 11th, 2014 at 11am. Be here for the huge party we’ll be throwing, complete with spot prizing, the Monster Army Team (MAT), and of course the biggest and baddest urban terrain park in the Midwest.

Cannon Park: The jumpline is up! Situated on the double, we’ve had issues in the past with building a jumpline on a hill with a lot of flat spots. After a lot of designing and calculating by our park team, we figured out a perfect equation. The jumpline is set up with some speed hits at the top, and then two poppy jumps. The last jump has two lips, so pick your pop! The Cannon Park also has the new 686 up-box and up-rail.

Showtime Park: The Showtime Park opened on Dec. 7th, and has since held about 10 features. For the weekend of Jan. 4-5, it will be rebuilt as a private park for the So-Gnar camp.

The Projects: The Projects are being built out today (1/1/2014) and will be open by the weekend!

Kelly building out Projects (1/1/2014)

The Playground: The Playground park has been built out for several weeks and currently has nine features. Included is the brand new Icelantic rail, the favorite Oakley box, and The Shop stall. We plan to rearrange Playground throughout the season, so keep an eye out!

Jiblet Park: Jiblet is built out and ready for those beginner to intermediate riders looking to progress their skills. We’ve got ground level and just-off-the-ground features serviced by Progression Express!

Riglet Park: The Riglet Park will be built in the next two weeks! Get your little ones ready!

As always, Cannonsburg’s parks will be second to none this season. We’ve added more features and are constantly improving our parks. Don’t hesitate to shoot us a facebook message, tweet at us, or email us with suggestions or questions!

Creek to Peak Challenge Run – Spring Edition

As sad as we are to say it, the winter season has come to an end. Now, it’s time to start thinking summer. We’ve got an impressive summer schedule with the first event coming up this weekend. We’ve been getting a lot of questions about what Creek to Peak is and to be honest, it’s hard to explain without pictures.

Creek to Peak is a challenge run meant for all ages and abilities to get outside, get active and have fun. This Saturday, March 30th, competitors will embark on a 5k course (just over three miles) where they encounter snow-themed obstacles. These features range from wall-climbs to tire runs to rope courses. There are two levels, competitive and non-competitive.

Event organizer Matt Schmucker assures that the features are made for all sizes and shapes, and competitors can always opt out of obstacles. He also encourages individuals to grab friends and compete as a team.

This three-part event series is a great way to get moving again and have fun outdoors with friends. We hope you’ll join us on our venture into the spring and summer. Check out some photos of Cannonsburg employees testing out the course!

#MyCannonsburg Photo Contest

We’ve made a huge effort to redefine Cannonsburg and make it a place for everyone. We launched our #MyCannonsburg campaign earlier in the season encouraging everyone to start tagging their social media posts with #MyCannonsburg so we can experience Cannonsburg with each and every person who comes out.

We love seeing the experience people have and how they make Cannonsburg their own. After our skiers and riders started tagging more and more, we realized #MyCannonsburg had some potential.

We wanted to take it a step further than just tagging. We decided to make a photo contest. Whether you’re a professional photographer or a professional Instagram-er, submit your best original shots to Cannonsburg for a chance to win. Every week, we’ll post some favorites on Facebook!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Rules: Keep it clean, make sure Cannonsburg is involved in some way, and try and show what Cannonsburg means to you. The more creative, the better! (MyCannonsburg can be all lowercase, all uppercase, a little of both… whatever fits your fancy.) Submit as many photos as you like.

The deadline for submissions is March 3rd. After that, a panel of judges will select their favorites. We’ll post those in an album on Facebook for public voting. We’ll pick winners in a few different categories and award prizing from Cannonsburg and our sponsors!

How to submit:
Instagram: Simply tag your photo with #MyCannonsburg
Facebook: Post your photo on our wall with #MyCannonsburg in the description
Email: Send an email to contest@cannonsburg.com with the subject line #MyCannonsburg

We look forward to seeing everyone’s submissions!

Finally Welcoming Winter

After a dramatic warm-up, temps have dropped bringing winter back to Cannonsburg. We’ve re-established a massive base which is allowing us to open two of our most loved Cannonsburg staples – the Triple and the Cannon Park.
Last season, the Triple chair remained closed. Extremely mild temps forced us to focus snow-making on all of the main runs which did not give us an opportunity to make snow on Triple.

We are looking at Friday night or Saturday morning as the opening time for Triple. We currently have “whalebacks” – massive mounds of snow – that need to be leveled out and groomed to fully open Triple.

jumplineThursday (1/24) we will be speed-testing our jumpline. If everything is perfect, we will be opening the Cannon Park on Thursday. If we have any tweaks to make, we will likely open it Friday.
We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work around the clock to make snow. Both of these assets require a great deal of snowmaking and grooming.

We look forward to being 100% open and seeing everyone enjoying the Triple and the Cannon Park!

Conditions, Racing, Thursday Night Sessions and the US Air Bag

We’ve got so much going on at Cannonsburg for everyone right now. High School Racing started last night, Adult race leagues start tonight, we’ve got Thursday Night Sessions beginning tomorrow and the US Air Bag will be on-site Friday through Sunday!

Conditions:
We’ve received a lot of questions about the upcoming warm weather and how this will affect operations at Cannonsburg.
We wanted to debunk a few myths and clear the air!
Blog ForecastWhile there is warm weather heading our way, it is nothing that will affect operations. Based on the current forecast, the worst weather will be early Friday morning. After that, a mild Saturday will be followed by normal winter temps allowing for snowmaking. What this means for our skiers and riders is Friday morning might not be the best, but this weekend will be amazing with spring-like temps and excellent conditions.
The cold temps next week will allow us to blow more snow and not only get our jumpline up, but finish building out the rest of our terrain parks!

Racing
IMG_1065Racing is in full effect for the season. High school racers were dominating Face last night on the Giant Slalom courses at max speeds. We love watching the racers and the community they have here at Cannonsburg! High School racing happens every Tuesday beginning at 4:30pm. Parents and friends are invited to hang out and watch racing every week. Their season ends February 7th.

Also beginning this week are Adult Race Leagues. The race league is a favorite for the 21+ crowd at Cannonsburg. Grab your skis or snowboards, pick your level of seriousness and come out for a guaranteed good time. Race Director John Losey loves the race league for its fun spirit and relaxed atmosphere. He points out while it is about the racing, it’s more about taking a break from work, school and life and coming out for a night of fun. It’s not too late to register! Check here for more information and stop into the main office to sign up!

Thursday Night Sessions
The Thursday night event series has become a favorite among riders at Cannonsburg.

Thursday-Night-Sessions_Poster11x17_RevThese mellow sessions are all about progressing and pushing yourself and your friends. Thursdays don’t fall into the “Contest” category, though we do give out some worthwhile prizing which we call as we see. Sometimes we’ll give prizing for a great trick, sometimes we’ll give it for the worst crash. Just depends, either way it’s all about having a good time.
Cannonsburg riders Logan Jamison and Harrison McIlhargey agreed the best part of TNS’s are the wings and the awesome vibes.
Oh yeah! Thursday nights $.50 wings and $2 pints are available afterwards in the Cedar Lounge. Cannonsburg is definitely the place to be on Thursday nights!

US Air Bag
For the first time ever, the US Air Bag will be at Cannonsburg. For those unfamiliar, here’s some info about the air bag. Basically, we build a large jump (14′ with a 45° trajectory) aimed at a massive air bag. The air bag is tough and resistant to the sharp edges on skis and snowboards. Riders can hit this jump and test out tricks, spins, double corks, triple back flips, whatever they want, without having to be as concerned about landing. Choose 3, 10 or 25 jumps with prices varying based on the number of jumps. This is a great learning opportunity and even if you’re not jumping it will be a great viewing experience.

We are approaching the most prime part of the season. Our parks will be completely built out soon, all of our clubs and groups are hitting the hill and every day, the conditions get better and better at Cannonsburg. Don’t miss out this season! Be sure to come take advantage of our amazing deals, great conditions, delicious food and an overall amazing winter experience!

Check out some of our favorite photos from the last few days at Cannonsburg!

So-Gnar

So-Gnar is fun, like really REALLY fun. Normally the crew comes out for a two-day event 382940_336261443058612_816799314_nwhich includes a camp and a contest. Cannonsburg’s stop has grown so much they’ve decided to host two camps and one contest. Check out the Facebook event page!

The camp is pretty basic. Over the 407575_336261866391903_1366659633_ncourse of two days, riders of all levels partner up with coaches to up their game across the board. The rider to coach ratio is small to increase the level of learning. Campers are placed with riders of their same skill level for maximum progression. This year, riders can opt to do the Thursday/Friday camp session, the Saturday/Sunday camp session or attend all four days.

The So-Gnar Shred Circuit is one of the biggest, baddest events at Cannonsburg. Last year, we saw some of the most progression at the Shred Circuit. Kids397398_336262369725186_330400926_n of all ages and skill levels came out and completely threw down. This year, competitors can walk away with a ton of prizing ranging from a new Never Summer board to a trip to Winter Park, Colorado.

So-Gnar is always one of the most fun weekends of the year at Cannonsburg. We are always excited about events that get kids excited about snowboarding where they can be in a positive learning environment and expand their abilities. We’re hoping to see a massive turnout this year.

The Faces of Cannonsburg – Part One

We’re starting a new series highlighting some of these amazing people who work here at Cannonsburg in all different departments.
This “Webisode” covers the Tri-Force. Doug Gale, Marc Moline and Kelly Bennett. These three are often found in Doug’s office exchanging ideas, laughing and finding ways to continue making Cannonsburg better every single day. Read on to learn a little bit about these behind-the-scenes faces. They’re pretty cool dudes!

THE HOPE
Doug Gale loves Cannonsburg. He’s been skiing here since he was just a kid, and he has Dougalways believed in its potential. Now, he’s making all of those visions happen. Doug works around the clock finding ways to improve Cannonsburg and make it a year round destination.

Doug has loved working on reinventing Cannonsburg since he took over operations in July 2010. He wanted to create a destination in Grand Rapids for skiers and snowboarders alike. While it has been a hard journey, he’s seeing the pay-off every single day through all of the positive feedback from skiers and riders. Doug is always watching edits from Cannonsburg, reading Facebook comments from followers and making sure every single person who comes to Cannonsburg has a positive experience and leaves wanting to come back day after day.

IMG_9313Doug’s priority when taking over was to improve across the board. He invested heavily in all areas, from new snow guns to new rental equipment. While Doug loves his job and the people he works with, he hates stressing over Michigan weather and waiting for winter to arrive. Doug is concerned with ensuring all customers understand his personal dedication to their ski & ride experience. He is quick to point out that while we’ve invested heavily in the terrain park experience at Cannonsburg, we’ve also invested in making it an all-around family destination by expanding skiable terrain and improving the operations on the hill.

Doug’s ultimate vision for Cannonsburg is for it to be a serious go-to destination not only in Michigan but for the entire Midwest. He is beyond excited about Cannonsburg winning the Transworld Top Three parks in the Midwest and hopes Cannonsburg will continue gaining respect and recognition for their efforts.

Kelly loves working with Doug. “He is about as hands on as an owner can be. For instance, Shredtoberfest. When it was time to maintain between heats, he had a rake and shovel and helped move snow and fix the run-ins and take offs. He’s not afraid to help out when an extra hand is needed.”

You never know where Doug will be on any given day. He might in his office, on the hill, in the rental building, anywhere. Doug likes to make sure every aspect of Cannonsburg is running smoothly and that every single skier and rider is having a great experience. Be sure to say hi to Doug! He loves getting to know those who call Cannonsburg their home mountain.

THE VISION
Marc Moline started riding at Cannonsburg nearly 20 years ago. Marc always had a unique vision for Cannonsburg, but previous ownership was never interested in exploring his ideas. Over the past ten years he was worked for several resorts and industry brands from Vermont to Colorado. In 2010, Doug reached out asking for help redefining and rebranding Cannonsburg.  Marc couldn’t resist. He packed up his life in Colorado and moved back to Michigan along with his terrain park counterpart Kelly Bennett, ready to make his home resort a go-to destination.

When asked what his job title is, Marc gave his typical modest grin and shrugged. He has been in charge of Cannonsburg’s image and identity since 2010. This means marketing, working with sponsors, terrain park design, overseeing media, and a plethora of other tasks. Some days you might find him in his office listening to music, working on designing a park for a certain event. Other days you can find him running the cat, building out that same design.
404702_2375313422822_1633093315_nMarc is thankful to have a job with a lot of creative freedom. Even early on when given a major task such as rebranding the company, he had complete trust and support from ownership to take the right direction. He can build his dream park set-ups, create his own apparel designs and concoct amazing events for Cannonsburg.

This season, keep an eye out for Marc on the hill during events. Normally he’s the guy on the microphone, but he’s taking on other roles. Filming and photography are major passions he is hoping to do more with this season. He can also be spotted slaying park features with his NeverSummer Revolver, giving tips and helping kids stomp tricks.

310724_290813054270118_1661448259_n

THE MUSCLE
Kelly Bennett is entering his third season as the Outdoor Operations Manager aka “the guy everyone comes to.” He moved from Colorado to Michigan in 2011 after consulting and travelling back and forth to Cannonsburg for a season. You’ve probably seen Kelly running the snow cat, building out Cannonsburg’s renowned terrain parks. He also runs snowmaking, performs lift maintenance, mows grass, maintains features, ensures the cat is running correctly, AND manages a day shift while trying to get some sleep!

Kelly started out snowboarding in his Maryland hometown and began taking his passion for riding a step further. He’s worked on the east coast and out west, but is proud to call the midwest his home. Kelly often works around the clock making sure all outdoor aspects of Cannonsburg are running smoothly and up to a high standard. It isn’t uncommon for Kelly to work all day on a park build, work overnight, watch the event, then go home and crash!

Marc loves working with Kelly because of his high level of commitment and willingness to try anything, no matter how crazy the feature or park design.

424815_379455032072586_1577963424_nKelly also loves the artistic freedom at Cannonsburg which allows him to create dream terrain parks. He loves the feeling of community and family at Cannonsburg. Kelly’s least favorite part about working at Cannonsburg, however, is how little snow has fallen the past two seasons. He’s quick to point out how much he loves working on the slopes of Cannonsburg, even without natural snow.

“You don’t need a 3,000 ft vertical to build an amazing park.” Kelly said. His cat operation is detailed. Kelly won’t stop until a jump is built and groomed to perfection, a rail is in the exact right spot or all groomed terrain is skiable for the day.

When Kelly isn’t at Cannonsburg, he’s hanging out with his wife, watching movies, playing guitar or dirtbiking. You can find him hanging out at events with a fake mullet and a majestic mustache. He is modest about his role at Cannonsburg and is quick to point out that none of this would be possible without his coworkers and team. He’s made many good memories in his few seasons at Cannonsburg and is looking forward to many more. This season, watch for Kelly in the snowcat or hanging out at events, maybe even participating in a few like the Boardercross!

Check back next week for a few more awesome Cannonsburg employees!
